Discovering Halifax: A Taste of Local Flavors and Scenic Ferry Rides

by - August 10, 2025

Welcome back to Ports and Pensions! On a recent cruise, we had the pleasure of exploring the charming city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. This port of call offers a wonderful blend of history, waterfront beauty, and local delights, and we're excited to share some of our favorite discoveries with you in our latest video walkthrough.

If you're cruising to Halifax, be sure to pack your walking shoes, because there's plenty to see and do right from the cruise terminal! Our first recommendation for any sweet tooth is a stop at the Atlantic Superstore. It's a great place to stock up on Canadian candies and other prepackaged treats. You'll find a fantastic selection to satisfy any craving!

From there, take a leisurely 20-minute stroll down the vibrant Halifax Waterfront to the Halifax Ferry Terminal. The waterfront itself is a destination, with shops, restaurants, and historical sites to explore as you make your way. Before you hop on the ferry, make sure to download the HFX Go app on your phone. It made purchasing our ferry tickets a breeze! The Alderney Ferry offers a short, scenic ride over to Dartmouth, and on weekdays, it runs every 15 minutes.

Once in Dartmouth, a culinary treat awaits. Head to the Alderney Landing Food Court area and head to Evans Seafood. We indulged in their seafood chowder, which was absolutely brimming with large, delicious pieces of lobster. It's a must-try for any seafood lover!

After a satisfying lunch, it's just a quick five-minute walk to Lake City Cider. Here, you can enjoy a cider flight and sample four different ciders, offering a refreshing taste of local craftsmanship.

Halifax truly offers a memorable experience for cruisers, from the convenience of its downtown port to the delightful explorations in Dartmouth. We loved our time tasting the local flavors and taking in the beautiful coastal views.
