About Chief Matt
I spent over 30 years running into burning buildings. Now I spend my retirement sailing the world's biggest cruise ships and telling you exactly what's worth your money and what isn't.
That's the whole premise of Ports & Pensions.
I'm not a travel journalist. I'm a regular guy, retired on a pension, who genuinely loves being at sea and has learned, sometimes the hard way, how to do it right. I've been on six cruises in the last 12 months alone, which means the advice here isn't from a single vacation someone took in 2019. I'm watching this stuff happen in real time: the price changes, the policy updates, the dining tricks, the cabin traps.
What I do on this channel and blog is simple. I walk every ship so you know what you're booking before you book it. I test the food and tell you what's actually worth the upcharge (and what isn't). I walk every port so you're not guessing when you step off the gangway. And every now and then, retirement takes you somewhere unexpected and I bring you along for that too.
In the fire service, you don't walk into a building hoping for the best. You know the layout. You plan for the hazards. You move with confidence instead of fear. I apply that same thinking to cruising — especially for retirees and seniors who want to enjoy every day of a sailing without getting burned by avoidable mistakes.
That's the smart luxury sweet spot. And that's what Ports & Pensions is all about.
Subscribe on YouTube and you'll get honest ship reviews, port guides, dining breakdowns, and cruise tips that'll save you time and money on every sailing.
